On the Origins of Art

Vernon Ah Kee 2008
Curated by Brian Boyd as part of On the Origin of Art, MONA - an experimental exhibition where scientists were given the job of curating art that they felt related to their own area of expertise. They each did an amazing job and created an exhibition minus the pompous snobbery often associated with the art world. Boyd curated Art as Controlled Play - and this particular drawing by Vernon Ah Kee was in the section: Faces As Pattern. The complexity of this drawing was breath taking. Haunting and captivating it felt both spontaneous and yet highly controlled. The darkness and depth of the eyes draw you in only to then become lost in the rhythm and movement of line.
